Melting Mail

This project consisted of an installation in a housing estate in York. For ‘Melting Mail’, four huge blocks of ice were created within which were embedded objects that had been covered in gold leaf and sealed within clear resin spheres. The blocks of ice appeared without warning one morning. How would people react to the sudden appearance of this huge ice cube embedded with desirable objects? Did people watch them melt in the sun, or did they take direct action with a hammer?
